BHULAN

The bhulan (BOO-lang) is closely related to the Ganges susu. Some scientists think they may be the same species. It once ranged from the Himalayan foothills to the Arabian Sea but is now confined to Pakistan. With 500 animals left, the bhulan is almost as endangered as the baiji.

Size: 2 to 2.5 m, 80 to 90 kg. Females larger than males
Calves at birth: 70 to 75 cm
Teeth: 27 to 33 slender, sharp-pointed teeth on each side of upper and lower jaws
Food: Fish (catfish), mollusks and crustaceans
Habitat: Rivers
Range: Indus River system within the provinces of Sind and Punjab, Pakistan
Status: Endangered species. Close to extinction. About 500 individuals left
